Hospitalized children experience different emotions, they may be scared, worried, confused or just bored. Pediatric departments try to keep toys, books, and games around for kids to play with, but they need constant repairing and replacing.
Time Required:
1 to 3 hours
Materials Needed:
You donýt need many materials for this project until you become involved with the hospital. Depending on the condition of the toys, you may need things like glue, masking tape, sandpaper and other items for repair.
Steps:
Start by visiting your hospitalýs pediatric department to find out what toys they already have and need. You could also make a list of the toys and books that need repair and plan on returning with the supplies. If the hospital needs new toys, you may want to enlist the help of your church or school with a Toy Tree. Write the name of each needed toy on a leaf cutout and hang them from a small evergreen tree in the lobby. You could also create a paper tree in a wall or bulletin board.
If your hospital only has a playroom for children who are mobile, you could volunteer to make a toy cart for the children who are not mobile. Basically it would be similar to a small bookcase on wheels, only the shelves should be wide enough for toys and games.
You can check on the toy supply every couple of weeks to see if they need new toys, supplies or repairs.
You could decide to put together some project kits to put in the playroom or on the cart for the children there.
