Project Ideas: Challenge Buddy

People with special needs want acceptance from you and me. They want to assimilate into "normal" social circles, be a contributing member of the community, and be recognized for their talents and ideas, not for their limits. If your family knows of someone challenged -- physically or mentally -- try to include him or her in some of your activities.

Time Required:
Ongoing

Materials Needed:
Only your time

Steps:
Call a family in your area that you know has a special needs child. If you donĂ½t know of one, call the school or social services and they can give you some ideas. Ask the family if the child would be interested in playing or doing a project with your family. In many cases you may need some training from the parent. Ask what you need to know to make the experience positive for all. If you first meeting goes well, set up another one and see if this can become an ongoing relationship.
