FamilyCares Toys & Toiletries For Hurricane Katrina Kids

It has been more than three years since the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over the city of Slidell, Louisiana, and some families have not yet recovered from the massive destruction. Your family can help children and families in need by collecting toiletries, baby supplies and small toys to send to Joy Fellowship Church in Slidell.

Joy Fellowship Church feeds 300 families each week. Families come in their cars and drive through a number of “stations” around the Church. At the first station, they receive boxed food and water, the next hygiene items, the next baby supplies, then cleaning supplies and finally a hot meal. They would love to give the children a small toy or coloring book and crayons.

Half of the city of Slidell was covered in water, destroying houses and businesses, schools, hospitals, and plants. This has caused huge unemployment. Refugees from New Orleans and Biloxi, each 45 minutes away have increased the population from 30,000 to 90,000. People are hungry and destitute. The Pastor of Joy Fellowship Church, Rev. Leslie Roques says, “I always wanted to be in the Mission Field, but my husband was posted to a suburban church. I could never have imagined in a million years the conditions that these people are living in – it is like a third world country .”

Sending Toys and Toiletries would cheer up children who have few possessions and are living in difficult conditions.

Steps Involved

  1. Discuss with your children what they think it would be like for your family to live in your car. Check out the books, A Shelter in Our Car by Monica Gunning (Click here to read an interview with Monica Gunning ) or When a Hurricane Blew by Mann's Miracles and edited by Shirley Mann . (Fourth grade kids created this book after experiencing direct hits from two major hurricanes within a single year and the resulting devastation to their Gulf Breeze, Florida community).
  2. Decide if you will collect items as a family or join with other families.
  3. Your children could earn money to buy toys and toiletries by doing extra chores or collecting cans and bottles. An old-fashioned lemonade stand is a fun way for the kids to earn money and a good way to tell others about the situation in Slidell, by making posters or flyers.
  4. Box the items and include notes of encouragement or drawings from your family.
  5. Mail directly to:
